Why the feeding guide on the bag is usually too generous

Bag charts are keyed to body weight alone, but two dogs of the same weight can differ substantially in what they need. Here is where the gap comes from and how to close it.

The chart on the back of the bag has one input: your dog’s weight. That is the whole model. Find the weight band, read across, pour that much.

One input cannot carry the whole answer

Energy requirements are conventionally estimated in two steps. Resting energy requirement comes from body weight — 70 × (kg0.75) — and then a multiplier converts that resting figure into a maintenance requirement for a particular dog.

That multiplier is where the individual dog enters. A neutered adult is typically fed at around 1.6 × RER and an intact adult at around 1.8 ×. Same weight, same resting requirement, roughly 11% apart before anything else is considered. A working dog and a dog that gets one street walk a day are further apart still.

A weight-only chart cannot express any of that, so it has to publish something that will not underfeed the hungriest reader of the row. The NRC is explicit that individual requirements vary considerably around any predicted value, which is exactly the variation a single column has to absorb.

Note the asymmetry in how those two errors get discovered. A dog fed 20% under its requirement gets hungry, and the owner notices. A dog fed 20% over gets fat slowly, over months, in a household that sees it every day.

Then the cup makes it worse

Suppose the chart is right for your dog. You still have to get that amount into the bowl.

Dry food is sold by weight and served by volume, and the conversion depends on kibble size, shape and how the cup was filled. When German and colleagues asked owners to measure out portions with a standard measuring cup, the results ranged from an 18% under-estimate to an 80% over-estimate of the intended portion. Coe and colleagues found comparable imprecision across three different measuring devices.

An 80% over-estimate is not a rounding error. It is most of a second meal.

The fix costs about fifteen dollars: weigh the food on a kitchen scale. A gram is a gram regardless of how the kibble settles, and it takes no longer than scooping once you have stopped thinking in cups. The number is a starting point, not a verdict

Every calculated requirement, including the one this site gives you, is a population estimate applied to an individual. It is where you start, not where you stop.

What closes the loop is body condition. WSAVA’s nutrition guidelines and the 2021 AAHA guidelines both frame nutritional assessment as an ongoing part of every examination rather than a one-time calculation, with body condition scoring as the practical instrument. Score your dog, feed the calculated amount for two to four weeks, score again, and adjust by 10% in whichever direction the score is asking for. It is worth doing properly. In the Purina lifespan study, dogs fed 25% less than their paired littermates through life stayed leaner and lived a median of roughly 1.8 years longer. That study is about lifelong body condition rather than any particular feeding chart, but it is the reason the difference between “about right” and “a bit generous” deserves more attention than it usually gets.

What to do this week

  1. Work out the calorie target with the calorie calculator, using the life stage and activity level that describe your actual dog.
  2. Convert it to grams of the food you actually buy with the portion calculator.
  3. Weigh it. Once. Then see what that looks like in your usual scoop, and use the scoop from then on if you prefer.
  4. Score body condition now, and again in a month.

If the bag and the calculator disagree by 10 or 15%, that is the expected result, not an error in either one. Your dog’s body condition in a month is the only thing that settles it.
