Dog Ideal Weight Estimator

Estimate your dog's target healthy weight from its current weight and body condition score.

Not sure? Use the body condition score calculator first.

Ribs: Ribs hard to feel under a moderate layer of fat.

Waist: Waist barely visible. Abdominal tuck may be absent.

Estimated ideal weight

20.8 kg

Overweight. A structured weight-loss plan with your vet is worthwhile.

Current weight
25.0 kg
Weight to lose
4.2 kg
Percentage from ideal
+20%
Calories to feed at target weight
682 kcal/day

Feed for the target weight, not the current one. Feeding a heavy dog for what it weighs today simply maintains the excess.

How this is calculated

The 9-point body condition scale is calibrated so that each point away from the ideal of 5 represents roughly 10% of body weight. That relationship is what makes an ideal weight calculable from a hands-on assessment.

ideal weight = current weight ÷ (1 + percentage from ideal ÷ 100)

Worked example

A 25 kg dog scoring 7 out of 9 is carrying about 20% excess. Ideal weight = 25 ÷ 1.20 = 20.8 kg, meaning 4.2 kg to lose. Note that subtracting 20% would have given 20.0 kg, a different and slightly harsher target.

The scale

Score Condition From ideal Ribs
1 Emaciated -40% Ribs, spine and hip bones visible from a distance. No fat you can feel.
2 Very thin -30% Ribs easily visible. No palpable fat. Bony landmarks prominent.
3 Thin -20% Ribs easily felt and may be visible with no fat cover.
4 Slightly underweight -10% Ribs easily felt with minimal fat cover.
5 Ideal 0% Ribs felt easily under a thin layer of fat, like the back of your hand.
6 Slightly overweight + 10% Ribs felt with slight excess fat covering.
7 Overweight + 20% Ribs hard to feel under a moderate layer of fat.
8 Obese + 30% Ribs not palpable without firm pressure. Heavy fat cover.
9 Severely obese + 40% Ribs impossible to feel under a thick fat layer.

Why the target matters more than the scales

Excess weight is the most common preventable health problem in dogs, and it is strongly linked to osteoarthritis, diabetes, respiratory disease and a measurably shorter life. A long-running study of Labradors found that dogs kept lean lived around two years longer than their littermates fed 25% more.

Once you have a target, feed for it rather than for current weight. The weight loss planner turns this figure into a daily calorie amount and a realistic timeline.

Common questions

How do I work out my dog’s ideal weight?

Score body condition on the 9-point scale, then divide current weight by (1 + the percentage over ideal). A 25 kg dog at score 7 is about 20% over ideal, so its target is 25 ÷ 1.2 = 20.8 kg.

Why divide instead of subtracting 20%?

Because the excess is expressed relative to ideal weight, not to current weight. Subtracting 20% from 25 kg gives 20 kg, which is close but consistently wrong, and the error grows with the score. At score 9 the two methods differ by nearly a kilogram on a 25 kg dog.

Is there a breed standard weight I should use instead?

Breed standards give a range for show dogs of typical frame size, which your individual dog may not have. Body condition scoring assesses the dog in front of you and works just as well for mixes, where no standard exists at all.

My dog is a healthy 5 but heavier than the breed standard. Is that a problem?

No. A large-framed dog at body condition 5 is at its correct weight even if that sits above the breed range. Frame size varies within every breed, and muscle weighs more than fat.

How much should my dog weigh after losing weight?

The target from this calculator is a starting estimate. Re-score body condition every month during weight loss and adjust; many dogs reach a 5 slightly above or below the first calculated target.
