How this is calculated
Metabolizable energy is estimated from the guaranteed analysis using the AAFCO modified Atwater factors. Carbohydrate is not measured directly; it is whatever is left once everything else is accounted for.
NFE % = 100 − protein − fat − moisture − fiber − ash
kcal per 100 g = (3.5 × protein%) + (8.5 × fat%) + (3.5 × NFE%)
kcal per kg = kcal per 100 g × 10 Worked example
A dry food with 26% protein, 15% fat, 10% moisture, 3% fiber and 8% ash leaves NFE = 38%. Energy = (3.5 × 26) + (8.5 × 15) + (3.5 × 38) = 91 + 127.5 + 133 = 351.5 kcal per 100 g, so about 3,515 kcal per kilogram.
Why not the human 4-9-4 factors
The familiar 4, 9 and 4 kcal per gram apply to highly digestible human foods. Pet foods contain more fiber and less digestible protein sources, so less of the gross energy is actually available. The modified factors of 3.5, 8.5 and 3.5 correct for that. Using the human numbers would overstate the energy content and lead you to underfeed.

Reading a guaranteed analysis
The panel gives guarantees, not measurements. Protein and fat are stated as minimums, so the food contains at least that much. Moisture, fiber and ash are maximums. That asymmetry is deliberate and it is why two foods with identical panels can differ in real energy content.
If the manufacturer publishes a calorie figure anywhere, on the bag, the website or by email, use theirs instead of this estimate. Theirs comes from feeding trials or laboratory analysis; this one comes from arithmetic on rounded guarantees.
Common questions
Why does my dog food not show calories?
Calorie content is required on pet food labels in the United States under AAFCO rules, but not everywhere, and many European and Asian brands omit it. Where it is missing you can estimate it from the guaranteed analysis, which is always printed.
What are modified Atwater factors?
They are energy values adjusted for the lower digestibility of pet food ingredients: 3.5 kcal per gram of protein, 8.5 for fat and 3.5 for carbohydrate. Human food uses 4, 9 and 4. Using the human figures on dog food overestimates energy by roughly 10%.
What is NFE?
Nitrogen-free extract, which is the carbohydrate fraction. It is not measured directly. It is what remains after protein, fat, moisture, fiber and ash are subtracted from 100%, which is why a missing ash figure affects the result.
The label does not list ash. What should I use?
Ash is mandatory in the EU but not in the US. Assume about 8% for dry food and 2% for wet food. Being 2% out on ash changes the final energy figure by around 70 kcal per kilogram, which is not enough to matter for portioning.
How accurate is this estimate?
Usually within about 10% of the manufacturer figure. The guaranteed analysis quotes minimums for protein and fat and maximums for moisture and fiber, so actual content differs slightly and real energy tends to run a little higher than this estimate.
Can I compare wet and dry food with this?
Yes, and it is the main reason to use it. Wet food looks far weaker per kilogram simply because it is around 78% water. Comparing on an as-fed basis is what matters for portioning; comparing nutrient percentages between wet and dry needs a dry matter conversion instead.
